Everybody's got an opinion

Another editorial (this time at the Inquirer) addresses the gulf between SEPTA and it's Transit Workers' Union over the issue of healthcare copayments. This one also suggests that demanding continued 100% funding is unrealistic, and hopes that a reasonable compromise can be found, perhaps granting the workers an overdue pay-raise in exchange for their starting to chip in toward insurance.

Does anybody know whether talks are even underway?

Uh. Yes. They have been for a while. In fact, I think TWU voted to strike on Oct. 31st if they don't get a contract.

That's not the same thing. (I know that a strike is threatened -- see here or here.) They were talking in the spring, then put off the deadline once, then put it off again indefinitely, and now the union has called a new deadline. But not a single report has stated that talks have resumed, which would be bad -- they're just repeating the stances that each side had six months ago. Have you seen or heard anything to indicate that they're actually sitting down?

(I mean, I certainly hope they are, but that's not the same thing as knowing anything.)
